How A 17-YO Sachin Fell For A 22-YO Anjali Is The Greatest Inning The Batsman Has Played
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar left the whole nation teary-eyed when he decided to hang up his boots on November 16, 2013.
“I want to thank all the people who have supported me endlessly, whether I scored a zero or I scored 100 plus. I’ve met so many guys who’ve fasted for me, who’ve prayed for me, done all sorts of things for me. You know, without all that, life wouldn’t have been like this for me,” he had said when he bid an emotional farewell to the sport at his home Wankhede Stadium.
And it’s true, the man commands a fan following that is unparalleled in world cricket. ‘Sachin! Sachin!’ is a cheer that triumphed every time he stepped on the field and grew the loudest when he played his last, the 200th Test match against West Indies.
But while all the achievements and controversies of the player are known to all, there’s a lot about the God of Cricket that is not in the public eye – especially how he fell for his wife, Anjali Tendulkar.
The Love-At-First-Sight
It was a love-at-first-sight when medical student Anjali Mehta saw the wonder boy of Indian cricket, Sachin, at an airport. The girl had gone to pick her mother up but was floored by the “cute looks” of the batsman.
“I told my friend, Oh! he is so cute. Then I ran after him and I forgot about my mother,” Anjali once confessed, at the launch of Sachin’s autobiography in 2014.
“Sachin was so embarrassed and did not even look at me.”
How they grew closer
Anjali then recollected that she managed to get Sachin’s number somehow and called to find out that the charismatic batsman did remember her.
“When asked what colour I was wearing, he remembered that it was an orange colour T-shirt.”
What started as a fan-meets-cricket incident quickly escalated to a stronger bond. It was a time when no emails or SMSes existed and call rates were pretty high. So the two soon decided to meet again.
However, meeting a girl in the public was pretty tough for Sachin, thanks to his roaring popularity, and calling her home even tougher, as he belonged to a conservative Maharashtrian family.
“He was a bit hesitant and said ‘how can a girl can come to my house’,” Anjali recalled.
She thus had to pose as a female journalist who wanted to interview the up-and-coming batsman. And while things were sailing smooth in the Tendulkar residence, it was Anjali’s sister who guessed something was fishy about this ‘interview’.
While the ‘friends’ weren’t busted then and there, they had a hard time keeping all of it a secret. The courtship ran for five long years before the two decided to tie the knot. Anjali was six years senior to him but that never posed a concern in the relationship. Sachin had always been too mature for his age.
How their movie date was ruined
Being famous since the beginning of his career, Sachin had a tough time taking Anjali out. The ace cricketer believed fans would not let him have his private time and thus used to wear fake beard and glasses when going out.
At one such outing, when Sachin and Anjali were out with friends, watching Roja, the group had to leave the movie midway. Sachin’s specs had fallen during the interval of the film and fans had surrounded him for autographs.
To avoid such happenings, they used to write letters to each other, especially when Sachin was out playing international cricket.
The marriage
The duo decided to take the relationship to next level in 1994 when they got engaged in New Zealand. Sachin was too afraid to break the news to his family and had asked Anjali to do the job. For him, it was scarier than facing the fastest of the bowlers.
“Indeed it was and that is how I had planned it. I was sitting in New Zealand happily and Anjali did it,” he said.
The two married each other on 24 May 1995 and are about to celebrate their 22nd anniversary soon.
“I’ve not known any other person in my life except Sachin. I understand him so well. So whether I am his girlfriend or his wife, it’s the same thing, just an extension of that bond,” Anjali had once shared.
And while the Master Blaster celebrates his 44th birthday today, we believe this is the most beautiful innings of the player. Happy Birthday, Sachin!
